Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple | Lord Shiva, Parvati Temple

Bhoga Nandeshwar Temple (also called “Bhoga Nandishwar” or “Bhoga Nandishvara”) is a Hindu temple located in the Nandi village at the base of the Nandi hills (or Nandidurga) in Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka state. India. It is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.

History

The original temple in the complex is recognized as one of the oldest temples in Karnataka, from the early 9th century. According to the Indian Archaeological Study, the oldest inscriptions referring to the construction of the temple for Shiva are from the ruler Nolambadiraj Nolambadiraj and the emperor Rashtrakuta Govinda III, dated .806, and the copper plates of the rulers’ Bana Jayatej and Dattiya. c.810. Later, the temple was under the patronage of successively notable dynasties of South India: the Ganga dynasty, the Chola dynasty, the Hoysala empire, and the Vijayanagara empire. After the medieval era, the local chiefs of Chikballapura and the rulers of the Kingdom of Mysore (Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan) controlled the region before it fell under British rule after Tipu Sultan’s death in c.1799. The architectural style is Dravidian. The temple is located at a distance of 60 km from Bangalore. The temple has been preserved as a monument of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Structure

The temple was built by Bana Queen Ratnavali during the 9th century AD. in the Dravidian style of construction. The main temple was repeatedly rebuilt in five successive dynasties under the Chola, Hoysala, Pallava, and Vijayanagar kings. This Big temple has three temples within the complex, Arunachaleswarar, Uma Maheshwara and Bhoga Nandeshwara (Bhoganandishwara).

The other part of the temple has a large inner water pool, called Sringeri Tirtha, and has steps carved into the rock, on which various lamps are lit on the side of the tank during some holidays such as Deepavali. This pond is believed to be a source of the Pinakini River. Inside the temple, some stone carvings are also represented.
