Wife of Lord Vishnu

According to South Indian belief, Bhumi is called Bhumi in Sanskrit. In mythological belief, she is known as Bhudevi. In some Puranas, she is called the wife of Vishnu. He is depicted with Sridevi in most Vishnu temples. In many Varaha temples, she is shown sitting on the lap of Lord Varaha. The demon Narakasura is said to be the son of Varaha and Prithvi in Srimad Bhagavad Purana.

Earth in Satyuga

According to South Indian belief, once during the Satya Yuga, Hiranyaksha threw her into the sea, and then Sri Hari Vishnu took the form of Varaha and rescued her. She is said to have taken the incarnation of Sita in the Treta Yuga and served Lord Rama. It is said that during the Dwapara Yuga, she took the incarnation of Satyabhama and served Lord Krishna. Further, Kunti is considered an incarnation of Earth.

Prithvi in North Indian belief

According to North Indian belief, mother Sita was the daughter of Bhudevi and her son’s name was Mangaladeva, the lord of Mars. Prithu’s father’s name is said to be Prithu. Prithu was manifested from the part of Vishnu. Prithu is considered to be the first king of the earth. It is said that Prithu first tamed the land and started farming and laid the foundation of the social system. Since then people left the caves and started living in houses. Prithu accepted Bhumi as his daughter and named her Prithvi.

Earth in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana

According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Hiranyaksha, the brother of the demon king Hiranyakashyapu, stole the earth in the Varaha Kalpa and took it to the ocean. After Lord Vishnu incarnated as Varaha and killed Hiranyaksha and brought the earth out of Patala, the Supreme Lord Brahma created the world and placed the earth on the ocean. Prithvi came in the form of fruit and started worshipping Shri Hari who was in the form of Varaha. Seeing the beautiful alluring form of the earth, Shri Hari became enamoured with the action and developed a relationship with the earth. Due to this conjunction, in time a magnificent child was born from the womb of the earth, known as Mars. This story is also narrated in Devi Bhagavata.

Land according to legend

According to legend, Lord Vishnu told Devarshi Narada that this earth was born from Madhu and Kaitabhara fat. When Mother Durga killed them both, ‘Meda’ came out of their bodies, which dried up in the sun’s brightness. Because of this, the land got the name ‘Medini’ at that time. According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, the entire story from the vision of Mother Earth to the birth of son Mangala is given in the Prakriti section. According to another legend, the man Mahavirat lived in the water forever. In time, Bhumi is said to have originated from Mahavirat’s hair. In some stories, Bhumi Mata is said to be the daughter of Maharishi Kashyapa.
