How to Worship God: Sitting or Standing?

In Hinduism, it is important to adhere to certain customs and rituals while performing pooja, especially at home. One common question that arises is whether to sit or stand during the worship. Let’s explore the significance of sitting down and the correct method of worshiping God.

The Significance of Sitting:

According to beliefs and customs, standing in the pooja room is not considered auspicious. Worshiping God while standing may not yield the desired results. Therefore, it is advised to sit on an asana (mat) during the pooja. Remember to place an asana on the floor and sit on it while performing the rituals.

Covering the Head:

Another essential aspect of pooja is to cover the head. Both men and women should always wear a cloth on their heads while worshiping. It is considered a mark of respect and devotion to the divine.

How to perform pooja

To perform pooja in the most auspicious way, it is important to follow certain guidelines:

1. Placement: As per Vastu Shastra, the face should be oriented towards the east or north direction during the pooja. Placing items such as the bell, incense, lamp, and other pooja essentials on the right side is considered favorable. Worshiping in this direction is believed to bring blessings of peace, prosperity, and good health to the household.

2. Forehead Tilak: While performing the pooja, it is customary to apply a tilak on the forehead. This mark signifies devotion and reverence. It is important not to worship with a bare or bald forehead. Even when visiting temples, it is advised to avoid going with an empty forehead.

Constructing a Dedicated Pooja Room:

When creating a dedicated space for worship within your home, there are a few guidelines to keep in mind:

1. Location: The ideal position for a pooja room is in the northeast direction of the house. This direction is considered highly auspicious according to Vastu Shastra. A pooja room in this location is believed to bring peace, wealth, happiness, and good health to the inhabitants.

2. Dimensions: The size of the pooja room should be proportional. Ideally, the width of the room should be twice the height. This proportion is considered harmonious and conducive to spiritual practices.

Avoiding Inauspicious Locations:

While constructing a pooja room, certain locations should be avoided:

1. Toilet Proximity: Ensure that there is no toilet situated above, below, or adjacent to the pooja room. Such proximity is considered inauspicious and may hinder the sanctity of the worship space.

2. Under Stairs: It is advised not to build a pooja room beneath the staircase. Walking over the room while using the stairs is considered disrespectful. Therefore, it is best to avoid such placements.

By following these rituals and guidelines, you can create a sacred space for worship and ensure that your pooja is performed with utmost reverence and spiritual significance. May your devotion and dedication bring you closer to the divine blessings you seek.
