Sri Peddamma Thalli Temple Legends
According to the prevalent legend, a powerful demon named Mahishasur who was the son of demon king Rambha and a water buffalo, who could easily change his form from human to buffalo, had dethroned Indra, the king of Heavens. He had the unique blessings of Lord Brahma that neither man nor God can defeat him. Due to that blessing, he had become more and more cruel. Defeated by him, all the Gods request the holy Trinity- Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. To end his cruelties, the holy Trinity created Devi Durga who is an incarnation of Ma Sati (Lord Shiva’s wife). Once she got supreme power from the holy Trinity and other Gods, she killed demon Mahishasur in a furious battle of ten days. Thus Durga pujo is a way to celebrate this eternal sign of truth and purity for ten days.
