Yamuna said: Brother! If you want to give me a boon, then give this boon that on this day every year you will come to my place. Similarly, the brother who goes to his sister’s house and accepts her hospitality, and on this day, whoever feeds him with tilak on his brother’s forehead, he should not be afraid of you. Along with this, Yamraj also gave a boon to Yamuna that if brothers and sisters take a dip in Yamuna river on this day, then my wrath will not be on them.

Yamraj accepted the prayer of Yamuna. It is said that since then this festival of sister and brother started being celebrated. It is said that a person who eats food from sister’s hand on Yama Dwitiya gets various kinds of happiness.
